What Does Wingfic Mean?
Fic TypeFic in which a character has wings — suddenly grown, secretly hidden, or natural to an AU. A venerable trope with surprisingly deep emotional applications.
Wingfic in Practice
Wingfic is one of fandom's classic 'just add wings' genres, old enough to have its own established conventions: the sudden-wing-growth crisis, the hidden wings revealed in a moment of trust, the grooming scene (wing care as intimacy is the genre's beating heart), and the worldbuilding AU where wings mark status or destiny. The appeal layers practical hurt/comfort material — wings get injured, bound, or neglected — over rich symbolism of freedom, otherness, and vulnerability; letting someone touch your wings is the trope's standard metaphor for letting someone in. Characters with canon wings give the genre a natural home, but its purest form remains gloriously unexplained wings appearing in fandoms with no aerodynamic justification whatsoever.
