Fanfic Glossary Work Skin

What Does Work Skin Mean?

AO3 Platform

Custom CSS an author attaches to a specific AO3 work to style its content — enabling formatted text messages, emails, newspaper clippings, and other visual effects inside a fic.

Work Skin in Practice

Work skins are how AO3 fics transcend plain prose: authors write CSS (or borrow from generously shared community templates) to render chat bubbles for texting scenes, redacted-document aesthetics, handwritten-letter styling, social media interfaces, and even interactive effects. The feature distinguishes itself from site skins, which change how the whole archive looks for the user applying them; a work skin travels with the fic and styles it for every reader. A whole tutorial ecosystem exists around them, with famous template posts circulating for years, and epistolary and SMAU-adjacent fic genres depend on them heavily. Considerate authors include a 'view with creator's style' reminder, since readers can toggle skins off — and the plain-text fallback still has to make sense.

Example usage

"The whole fic is told in texts and emails, and the work skin makes every message look like a real phone screen."
