Fanfic Glossary Epistolary

What Does Epistolary Mean?

Writing & Craft

A story told through documents — letters, diary entries, emails, texts, news clippings — rather than conventional narration. An old literary form fandom keeps gleefully modernizing.

Epistolary in Practice

Epistolary fiction goes back centuries in the literary canon, and fanfiction adopted the form with particular inventiveness: fics told entirely in mission reports, group chats, forum threads, Wikipedia articles, voicemail transcripts, or academic papers about the characters, complete with footnotes. The form's craft challenge is indirection — every emotional beat must survive translation into documents the characters would plausibly produce — and its payoff is voyeuristic intimacy, the sense of reconstructing truth from fragments. Fandom's modern variants, chatfic foremost among them, are epistolary by lineage. AO3 work skins let dedicated authors typeset their fake documents with alarming realism.

Example usage

"The whole fic is epistolary — incident reports and increasingly unprofessional margin notes — and the romance lives entirely in the marginalia."
