Fanfic Glossary Yuri

What Does Yuri Mean?

Content Term

The Japanese-fandom term for female/female romantic and sexual content, spanning everything from gentle romance to explicit work. Western fandom's parallel term is femslash; 'GL' (girls' love) serves as the commercial genre label.

Yuri in Practice

Yuri (literally 'lily,' the flower long associated with female romance in Japanese culture) names the F/F counterpart tradition to BL: a genre with deep roots in Japanese girls' literature and dōjinshi culture, encompassing both idealized romantic intimacy and explicit content, created for diverse audiences. Western anime fandom imported the term during the same era it adopted yaoi, with 'shoujo-ai' used at the time for the non-explicit end — a usage that, like shounen-ai, has largely retired in favor of the umbrella terms yuri and GL. The genre's international profile has risen substantially with the mainstream success of yuri manga and anime, and in fandom spaces the term coexists with femslash and wlw, each carrying its own community lineage. Yuri fandom culture celebrates its own canon classics, tropes, and the perennial campaign for more and better F/F content everywhere.

Example usage

"The yuri anime's finale delivered an unambiguous confession, and the genre's longtime fans treated it as a historic event."
