Fanfic Glossary Animatic

What Does Animatic Mean?

Fandom Culture

A fan-made video of sequenced drawings set to audio — usually a song, scene, or musical number — animated through cuts and limited motion rather than full animation. A defining fanwork form of 2010s YouTube fandom.

Animatic in Practice

Borrowed from professional animation's storyboard-reel stage, the fan animatic turns a song or audio clip into a drawn visual narrative: dozens or hundreds of illustrations timed to the track, with motion implied through cutting. The form exploded with musical fandoms — Hamilton animatics were a generational phenomenon — and thrives wherever fandom wants to cast characters in songs, alternate scenes, or crossover performances. Animatics sit between fanart, AMV culture, and vidding: cheaper than full animation, more narrative than a static illustration, and capable of genuine emotional force in skilled hands. For many young artists, animatics were the gateway from fanart into storytelling, and 'this scene but it's an animatic of that one audio' remains a reliable fandom genre.

Example usage

"Someone made an animatic of the breakup scene set to that one bridge, and the comment section is a mass casualty event."
