The ask box shaped an entire era of fandom culture. Writers run prompt games ('send me a ship and a number'), answer headcanon questions, and receive anonymous compliments or hate depending on the day. Whole fic genres grew out of it: ask-box ficlets, imagines blogs, and incorrect-quotes blogs all rely on a steady stream of asks. The optional anonymous setting gives the feature its particular flavor — shy fans can gush freely, and 'ask games' circulate as reblogable lists of numbered questions. When someone says 'my inbox' in fandom Tumblr context, they almost always mean the ask box.
