Anonymity has deep roots in fandom infrastructure: kink memes ran on anon comments, Tumblr's ask box has an anon toggle, and AO3 allows guest comments and anonymous posting through collections. The culture around anons is double-edged. Anonymity lets people request or post things they would be embarrassed to attach to their name, ask newbie questions safely, and confess admiration without social pressure; it also enables anon hate, which is why many blogs periodically turn the option off. Friendly recurring anons sometimes adopt emoji signatures so authors can recognize them across messages.
