Fanfic Glossary Canon Event

What Does Canon Event Mean?

Fandom Culture

A moment treated as fixed and unavoidable in a character's story — originally a plot concept from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, now general slang for formative experiences that must happen. Often used jokingly about real life: 'I cannot interfere, it is a canon event.'

Canon Event in Practice

Across the Spider-Verse (2023) introduced canon events as in-universe physics: certain tragedies define every Spider-person, and disrupting them threatens reality. The phrase escaped the film almost immediately and became multipurpose internet slang for any rite-of-passage disaster, fictional or personal — a terrible first apartment, a doomed situationship, a regrettable haircut. Within fandom specifically, it gets used both straight (discussing which moments are essential to a character) and ironically (watching a character walk into known catastrophe). It is a rare case of canon coining a word about canon itself, which fandom found irresistible.

Example usage

"Watching him trust the obviously evil mentor again — I cannot intervene, it is a canon event."
