What Does NSFW Mean?
Abbreviation'Not Safe For Work' — a general internet label for sexually explicit or otherwise workplace-inappropriate content. Fandom uses it to flag art, fic, and posts containing adult material.
NSFW in Practice
NSFW predates fandom's current platforms and remains the lingua franca warning across all of them, applied to everything from explicit fanart to suggestive headcanon posts. On AO3 the formal equivalent is the rating system — Mature and Explicit works are the archive's NSFW tier — but on Tumblr, Twitter, and Discord, where no shared rating system exists, the four-letter label does the heavy lifting, often as channel names like #nsfw-fanart. The counterpart SFW marks content as clean. Platform crackdowns on NSFW material, most famously Tumblr's 2018 adult-content ban, have repeatedly reshaped where fandom's adult side lives.
