Beta Reader in Practice
Beta reading is one of fandom's oldest collaborative institutions, dating back to mailing lists and zines, with the name borrowed from beta testing in software. A good beta does anything from light proofreading to deep structural editing, depending on the arrangement, and long author-beta partnerships often grow into close friendships and co-writing. Some fandoms maintain beta-finding communities, while many authors simply ask their group chat. Posting without one is common enough that 'no beta we die like men' — adapted per fandom with its own characters — became one of AO3's most beloved joke tags. Crediting your beta in the notes is standard etiquette.
