Fanfic Glossary WIP (Work in Progress)

What Does WIP (Work in Progress) Mean?

Abbreviation

An unfinished work being posted as it's written — the serialized heartbeat of fic culture, complete with update hopes, hiatus fears, and the eternal gamble of starting one.

WIP (Work in Progress) in Practice

The WIP defines fandom's relationship with time: readers board stories mid-construction, subscribe for updates, and accept the fundamental risk that the fic may never finish — a calculated heartbreak every veteran reader has survived. The culture around WIPs is rich and self-aware: 'never read WIPs' factions versus serial devotees, comment sections as cheering sections between chapters, the folk wisdom that engagement fuels completion, and deep etiquette questions about asking for updates (gentle enthusiasm: welcome; demands: never). For writers the WIP is both motivator and millstone — public accountability finishes some stories and haunts others into the drafts folder forever. AO3's chapter counters ('14/?') quietly encode the whole drama; that question mark contains multitudes.

Example usage

"I swore off WIPs after the great abandonment of 2019, and I have broken that vow eleven times since."
