What Does Cliffhanger Mean?
Writing & CraftEnding a chapter at a moment of maximum suspense — mid-revelation, mid-fall, mid-kiss — forcing readers to wait for the next update. In serialized fic, the cliffhanger is both beloved craft and cherished grievance.
Cliffhanger in Practice
The cliffhanger is ancient serial technique, but fanfiction's update-by-update publishing model gives it special potency: a novel's cliffhanger costs a page turn, while a WIP's cliffhanger can cost months. Comment sections after a brutal chapter ending develop their own genre of affectionate outrage — keyboard smashes, betrayal accusations, demands the author sleep with one eye open — which most writers treasure as the highest engagement compliment. Authors' notes often apologize for cliffhangers with transparent insincerity. The risk is real, though: end a WIP on a cliffhanger and then abandon it, and fandom will remember the crime for a decade.
Example usage
"She ended the chapter mid-sentence during the confession scene and the comments are just two hundred keyboard smashes."
