Fanfic Glossary Discourse

What Does Discourse Mean?

Fandom Culture

Fandom's term for recurring public arguments about ethics, ships, and content — said with a weariness the dictionary definition lacks. 'The discourse' is less a conversation than a weather system.

Discourse in Practice

In fandom usage, discourse refers to the cyclical, high-emotion debates that sweep through platforms: whether dark fic is harmful, whether certain ships are acceptable, who counts as a real fan, what creators owe their audiences. The word acquired its ironic flavor on Tumblr, where 'discourse' tags let users filter the arguments out — itself a commentary. Veterans recognize that most discourse cycles repeat older fandom wars with new vocabulary, and entire taxonomies (anti versus proship, purity culture debates) have calcified around the recurring fault lines. Announcing 'I am not getting involved in the discourse' is a standard fandom survival posture, honored roughly half the time.

Example usage

"The ship discourse reignited over the weekend, so I muted four tags and read curtainfic until it passed."
