College AU in Practice
The college AU thrives because campus life is a narrative cheat code: it throws characters into shared housing, forced collaboration, parties, and finals-week meltdowns, all with adulthood's freedom and none of its full weight. Stock figures recur across fandoms — the engineering student running on energy drinks, the art major, the impossibly hot TA — and tropes like roommate pining and study sessions that become something else are practically pre-installed. For fandoms whose canons are heavy with violence or tragedy, the college AU performs the same mercy as the coffee shop AU: everyone is alive, and the worst villain is organic chemistry. It overlaps with high school AUs but allows mature content and adult stakes.
