High School AU in Practice
The high school AU transplants any cast — gods, soldiers, detectives, centuries-old vampires — into adolescence's universal drama machine, and the incongruity is half the appeal: the war rivals become rival lacrosse captains, the doomed king runs for student council. The template's endurance comes from its narrative furniture, instantly legible to every reader: shared classes manufacture proximity, social hierarchies supply conflict, and the school calendar provides structure from first day to graduation. Fandom deploys it for fluff and meet-cutes far more than realism, though a serious strain uses adolescence to examine characters' formations honestly. It overlaps with college AUs, which trade the same machinery upward for adult freedoms, and in anime fandom the form barely counts as an AU at all, canon having frequently gotten there first.
