What Does Comment Fic Mean?
Fic TypeA short fic written directly in the comments of a post, prompt thread, or another work — improvised, unpolished, and posted where it landed. A signature form of the LiveJournal era that still surfaces wherever fans gather.
Comment Fic in Practice
Comment fic grew from LiveJournal and Dreamwidth's threaded comments, where prompt posts invited anyone to fill requests right there in the thread, sometimes spawning chains of linked ficlets as length limits forced multi-comment serialization. Kink memes ran on the same mechanics. The form's charm is its immediacy — fic as conversation, written in minutes and shaped by the thread around it — and its archaeology: some of fandom's most beloved stories began as anonymous comment fills later expanded and archived properly. The practice continues in Discord servers and reply chains, and AO3 collections exist specifically to preserve old comment fic from link rot.
