The prompt/fill pair is fandom's request economy in two words: someone posts a scenario they want to exist, and a fill is any work that delivers it, with one prompt free to collect multiple fills from different creators. The terminology crystallized on LiveJournal-era kink memes, where anonymous prompts accumulated in comment threads and 'filled' versus 'unfilled' became the communities' fundamental sorting — unfilled-prompt lists circulated like wanted posters, and a years-old prompt suddenly receiving a magnificent fill remains one of fandom's best minor miracles. The vocabulary outlived the meme platforms and now works anywhere prompts circulate: Discord request channels, fest claims, and bingo squares all get filled. Authors' notes still faithfully link the prompt a fill answers, completing the circuit.
