Fanfic Glossary Kink Meme

What Does Kink Meme Mean?

Fandom Culture

An anonymous prompt-and-fill community — historically a LiveJournal or Dreamwidth comment thread — where users request fic (often but not exclusively adult) and others write fills anonymously. A foundational fandom institution of the 2000s and 2010s.

Kink Meme in Practice

Kink memes ran on anonymity's double permission: prompters could request anything without attaching their name, and fillers could write outside their reputation, a structure that proved spectacularly generative — major fandoms' memes accumulated tens of thousands of prompts, and despite the name, requests ranged from explicit content to gen fluff and crack. The format's mechanics became fandom vocabulary: prompts, fills, unfilled-prompt lists, 'OP here' gratitude, and the de-anon, when a filler claimed a popular fill under their real pseud, often expanding it into a famous archived work. Several of fandom's most celebrated fics began as anonymous meme fills. The institution faded with its platforms, succeeded by Discord servers, prompt fests, and AO3 prompt-meme collections, but its DNA — anonymous request culture and the prompt/fill economy — runs through all of them.

Example usage

"The fandom's legendary 300k fic started life as an anonymous kink meme fill for a six-line prompt, like half the classics of that era."
