Fanfic Glossary Drafts (AO3)

What Does Drafts (AO3) Mean?

AO3 Platform

Unposted works saved on AO3 before publishing. Crucially, drafts are temporary: the archive deletes unposted drafts after about a month, a fact that has burned many an unwary author.

Drafts (AO3) in Practice

AO3's draft system lets writers stage a work — testing formatting, previewing tags, scheduling their courage — before posting, and chapter drafts work similarly on existing fics. The expiration policy is the famous catch: drafts are not long-term storage, the deletion timer is roughly one month from creation, and the archive warns about this precisely because authors have historically treated the draft bin as a backup folder and lost work. The standing community advice is blunt: write and store fic elsewhere, use drafts only for prepping posts. Draft previews are also where authors catch formatting carnage from pasted documents before readers ever see it.

Example usage

"Learn from my pain and never leave your only copy in AO3 drafts, because that timer is real."
