Fanfic Glossary Fancast

What Does Fancast Mean?

Fandom Culture

A fan's imagined casting of real actors for characters who lack official faces — book characters, comic characters, or roles fans would recast. 'Who is your fancast' is a perennial fandom conversation.

Fancast in Practice

Fancasting thrives wherever canon leaves appearance to the imagination: book fandoms assemble dream casts decades before adaptations exist, comic fandoms argue successors for superhero roles, and announced adaptations detonate comparison discourse between official casting and the fandom's collective picks. The practice produces its own content genres — fancast edits, side-by-side graphics, casting threads — and its own friction, since fans attach hard to particular faces and official choices can feel like contradiction of something internally canon. Fancasts also shape fic: authors describe characters with their fancast in mind, and readers report 'seeing' a fandom's consensus fancast even in works that never name one.

Example usage

"My fancast for the captain has been the same actor for ten years, and the actual casting announcement personally wronged me."
