Fanfic Glossary Feral

What Does Feral Mean?

Fandom Culture

Fandom slang for unhinged enthusiasm — a state of joyful, exaggerated loss of composure over a character, ship, or canon event. Fans 'go feral,' affectionately and on purpose.

Feral in Practice

Fandom lifted feral from its literal meaning and made it the standard self-description for enthusiasm past the point of dignity: trailers, plot twists, and well-timed fanart all reportedly send fans feral, and the word's comedy lies in describing screaming about fictional people as if it were an animal-control situation. The usage also attaches to characters — feral as a characterization compliment describes beloved chaotic or bite-prone types, and 'feral!Character' fic delivers them at maximum wildness. The term saturated Tumblr and Twitter fandom in the late 2010s alongside kindred vocabulary like unhinged and rotating-in-my-mind, all serving fandom's signature register: sincere obsession narrated with self-aware irony.

Example usage

"The two-second trailer shot of them back to back sent the entire tag feral for a week."
