Fanfic Glossary Friends-lock

What Does Friends-lock Mean?

Fandom Culture

The LiveJournal-era practice of restricting a post to your approved friends list — 'flocked' posts were visible only to mutuals. The mechanism shaped how journal fandom managed privacy, gossip, and adult content.

Friends-lock in Practice

LiveJournal let users post publicly, privately, or friends-only, and the friends-lock became journal fandom's basic privacy tool: adult fic went behind the lock, candid wank about ongoing drama went behind the lock, and 'flocked' became a verb everyone understood. Custom filters refined it further, letting users show different posts to different subsets of their flist (friends list). The system created journal fandom's characteristic texture of concentric circles — public fic, semi-private discussion, deeply private filters — that flat platforms like Tumblr never replicated, to many veterans' lasting grief. Dreamwidth preserves the mechanism today, access-lists and all.

Example usage

"The really honest postmortem of the exchange drama was flocked, naturally, so half the fandom only ever heard rumors."
