Fanfic Glossary Gary Stu

What Does Gary Stu Mean?

Fandom Culture

The male counterpart of a Mary Sue: an implausibly perfect, effortlessly admired character — often an author stand-in — who warps the story around his own wonderfulness. Also rendered as Marty Stu.

Gary Stu in Practice

The parent term Mary Sue comes from a 1973 Star Trek fanzine parody, 'A Trekkie's Tale,' which lampooned the youngest-lieutenant-in-the-fleet genre of self-insert heroine; fandom later coined masculine equivalents as the critique generalized. A Gary Stu's diagnostic features mirror his sister's: universal competence, tragic-but-cool backstory, canon characters reorganizing their personalities to admire him, and consequences that bend politely out of his way. Decades of usage have complicated the whole Sue/Stu framework — critics note the female version draws disproportionate fire while male power fantasies pass unremarked, an asymmetry the Gary Stu label exists partly to correct. In practice the term now functions less as gatekeeping than as craft shorthand for protagonist-worship unbalanced by flaws.

Example usage

"The OC is a full Gary Stu — outflies the ace, outsnarks the captain, and the admiral offers him a command by chapter three."
