What Does Honorifics Mean?
Writing & CraftThe Japanese address suffixes — -san, -kun, -chan, -sama and others — that signal relationship and respect, and the perennial fic-writing question of whether to keep them in English-language fanfiction.
Honorifics in Practice
Honorifics encode social information English lacks compact tools for: -san is polite distance, -kun familiar address (typically toward males), -chan affectionate diminutive, -sama elevated respect, and dropping honorifics entirely signals real intimacy. That last point is why fic writers care — a character switching from surname-san to given name is a canonical romance beat in Japanese media, and translating the moment without honorifics takes real craft. Fandom practice splits: some writers keep honorifics for fidelity, others localize fully, and both camps have defensible style arguments dating back to the fansub era. The only firm rule is internal consistency, and even that gets debated.
Example usage
"Chapter ten is titled 'First Name Basis' and yes, it's about exactly the honorific drop you think it is."
