What Does Kink Mean?
Content TermA specific sexual interest or theme in adult fanworks — and, in fandom's broader borrowed usage, any strongly preferred narrative element ('competence kink,' 'hand kink'). Tagged specifically so readers can filter precisely.
Kink in Practice
In its literal sense, kink is the organizing vocabulary of adult fic: works tag their content specifically, kink memes historically organized whole communities around prompt-and-fill exchanges of such material, and the granular tagging culture exists so readers opt into exactly what they want and nothing they do not. Fandom's signature move was extending the word past sexuality into a general term for narrative cravings — 'competence kink' for loving characters being good at things, 'banter kink' for dialogue — usage that is now standard and mostly desexualized. The community's accompanying ethic is encoded in the old LiveJournal maxim 'your kink is not my kink (and that is okay),' fandom's foundational live-and-let-read principle, which underwrites everything from tagging norms to the anti/proship divide.
Example usage
"Calling it a competence kink is the only honest explanation for how many heist fics I have read this year."
