Mature in Practice
Mature covers works that are unmistakably for adults but stop short of fully explicit depiction: sex scenes with literary rather than anatomical focus, serious violence, heavy psychological content. Because the Mature/Explicit line is author-judged, fandom has argued about it since the archive opened — one writer's Mature is another's Explicit, and rating-up versus rating-down debates recur whenever someone is surprised by a fic's contents. The rating interacts with AO3's adult-content click-through and with readers' filtering habits, making it a meaningful access boundary rather than just a label. Authors uncertain between tiers are traditionally advised to rate up, advice followed approximately half the time.
