Meta covers everything from a paragraph of character analysis to ten-thousand-word essays with screencap evidence: why a character's arc rhymes with another's, what a costume change signals, how a fandom's shipping patterns evolved. The genre flourished in journal fandom, where comment threads could sustain real argument, and adapted to Tumblr's essay-post culture; writers known for meta hold a recognized fandom role distinct from (and overlapping with) fic authors. Good meta feeds fic directly — half the headcanons in any fandom trace back to someone's persuasive analysis post. The term also covers fandom self-analysis, and entries like this one are, technically, meta about meta.
