What Does NOTP Mean?
Shipping CultureA pairing a fan actively dislikes — the anti-OTP. Where an OTP is the ship of your heart, a NOTP is the one you scroll past, filter out, or rant about to trusted friends.
NOTP in Practice
The term is a direct play on OTP, swapping 'one true pairing' for an emphatic 'no.' Everyone's NOTPs are personal: a ship may clash with someone's read of the characters, squick them, or simply bore them, and fandom etiquette holds that the polite response is curation — blacklisting tags, using AO3's exclusion filters — rather than marching into shippers' spaces to complain. The concept gets invoked constantly in discussions of fandom courtesy, since 'your OTP is someone's NOTP and vice versa' is the foundational argument for tagging well and shipping-and-letting-ship.
Example usage
"That pairing is my NOTP, so I just keep it permanently filtered out and we coexist peacefully."
