Fanfic Glossary Problematic Fave

What Does Problematic Fave Mean?

Fandom Culture

A character (or celebrity) you adore despite their glaring flaws, crimes, or general moral disaster status — affection declared with the disclaimer built in. The term is usually self-aware and fond.

Problematic Fave in Practice

The phrase rose on 2010s Tumblr, where it served as both honest self-deprecation and a small armor against discourse: naming your fave as problematic acknowledged the flaws before anyone could weaponize them. Applied to fictional characters, it overlaps with villain-loving and morally-grey appreciation, the time-honored fannish habit of cherishing characters one would flee in real life. Applied to real people, the term gets heavier and feeds genuine debates about separating art from artist. A related blog format, 'Your Fave Is Problematic,' catalogued celebrities' offenses and lent the phrase its name before the format itself became a discourse artifact. In most fic spaces today the term is used with a shrug and a grin.

Example usage

"He's my problematic fave: war crimes in canon, but he loves his daughter and his coat game is unmatched."
