What Does Rec Mean?
Fandom CultureShort for recommendation: pointing other fans at a fic (or artist, podfic, vid) you think is worth their time. Reccing is fandom's word-of-mouth engine.
Rec in Practice
With millions of works and no marketing departments, fandom runs on recs — the friend who DMs you a link with 'drop everything,' the Tumblr post annotating five favorites, the Discord channel that exists solely for fic links. A good rec traditionally includes the title, author, pairing, length, and a pitch for why it's special, plus warnings where relevant. Rec culture has its own institutions: themed rec weeks, communities dedicated to recs for specific genres, and the time-honored practice of asking 'does anyone have recs for...' with a hyper-specific trope shopping list. For authors, learning a stranger recced your fic is among the hobby's purest joys.
Example usage
"One rec from a big blog and the fic's hit count tripled in a weekend."
