What Does Reverse Harem Mean?
Content TermA romance configuration in which one protagonist — usually a woman — is surrounded by multiple love interests, all orbiting her. The mirror image of the classic harem setup from anime and games.
Reverse Harem in Practice
The term comes from anime, manga, and otome game genre vocabulary, where 'harem' describes one lead courted by many, and the 'reverse' flips the usual genders. In fanfic and increasingly in published romance, reverse harem has evolved past its pick-one-suitor origins: the modern usage often means the heroine ends up with all of them, overlapping with polyship and 'why choose' romance. Fic versions flourish in fandoms with large casts of compelling options, and reader-insert reverse harems are a Wattpad and AO3 staple. The genre conversation around it tends to celebrate wish fulfillment unapologetically — the entire point is abundance.
Example usage
"It's a reverse harem AU where she simply refuses to choose between the four of them, and the fic agrees she shouldn't."
