Fanfic Glossary Role Reversal

What Does Role Reversal Mean?

Content Term

A trope that swaps characters' canonical positions — hero and villain trade places, mentor becomes student, the rescuer becomes the one needing rescue. The cast stays; the roles rotate.

Role Reversal in Practice

Role reversal AUs are thought experiments about how much of a character is circumstance: would the hero have fallen given the villain's history, and would the villain have saved the world given the hero's chances? Common builds include swapped hero/villain alignments, exchanged powers or destinies, and dynamics flipped within a ship — the confident one pining, the protected one protecting. The trope overlaps with swap AUs and 'what if their places were exchanged' canon divergences. Its enduring appeal is diagnostic: by running the cast through exchanged roles, writers isolate what's essential about each character, and the best reversals make both versions feel inevitable.

Example usage

"The role reversal AU makes her the demon and him the exorcist, and their canon dynamic survives the swap perfectly."
