Subscriptions (AO3) in Practice
Subscriptions are how readers ride along with unfinished stories: a work subscription fires on new chapters, a series subscription on new installments, and an author subscription on anything that writer posts. The feature shapes fandom's serial-reading culture — the update email arriving for a long-dormant WIP is a recognized emotional event, complete with the ritual of rereading earlier chapters first — and subscriber counts quietly signal a work's living readership in a way archived hit totals can't. Strategy differs by temperament: some subscribe to everything and live amid notifications; others wait for Complete status and binge. For authors, the subscription count is the audience that has explicitly asked to be told when you write more.
