Whumptober in Practice
Whumptober adapted the daily-October-challenge format (popularized by art's Inktober) for the whump community: each year's official list assigns a suffering theme per day — captivity, fever, 'forced to watch' — and creators post fills tagged to the event, from drabbles to full one-shots, across every fandom simultaneously. The event's scale is remarkable: thousands of works flood AO3's collection each October, and for many writers the challenge functions as an endurance exercise and community festival in one, complete with alternate prompts and no-pressure completion norms. It sits alongside other prompt-calendar events (Febuwhump being its February sibling) as proof that fandom will industrialize any shared appetite, given a spreadsheet and a hashtag.
