Fanfic Glossary Word Count

What Does Word Count Mean?

Writing & Craft

The length of a work in words — fic's universal metric, displayed on every AO3 listing and woven into how fandom discusses, filters, and brags about stories.

Word Count in Practice

Fandom is unusually word-count literate because the number is always visible and always meaningful: readers filter by length the way moviegoers check runtimes, and the culture has informal brackets — drabbles at exactly 100, ficlets under a thousand, one-shots in the low thousands, the 50k novel threshold, and the six-figure epics that constitute serious relationships rather than reading material. Writers track counts as progress (NaNoWriMo's 50k, sprint totals, the triumphant 'chapter ran long'), and the metric anchors challenges and bragging rights across the community. Its limits are equally proverbial: word count measures commitment, not quality, and every reader knows a 2k fic that outweighs someone's quarter-million words. Still, no fandom statistic is consulted more often.

Example usage

"Sorted the tag by word count descending, as one does when the weekend is long and the heart is empty."
