Fanfic Glossary Hiatus

What Does Hiatus Mean?

Fandom Culture

A declared pause — a WIP's updates suspended, a creator stepping back, or a canon's gap between seasons. Distinguished from abandonment by the stated intention to return.

Hiatus in Practice

Hiatus does double duty in fandom vocabulary. For fic, it is the honest middle state between active and abandoned: authors announce hiatuses in notes and profiles, and readers learn to parse the dialect — 'short hiatus' (months), 'indefinite hiatus' (prepare yourself), and the unannounced hiatus that only the update dates reveal. For canon, hiatus names the dead air between episodes or seasons, and fandom's response to it is generative: the long gaps in airing schedules historically produced legendary surges of fic, theories, and fanon, as communities fed themselves while the source starved them. Hiatus culture has its own gallows humor on both fronts, and 'back from hiatus' posts — authorial or canonical — are reliably among fandom's most celebrated events.

Example usage

"The fic went on indefinite hiatus at chapter nineteen of twenty, and I think about that final author's note more than some real events in my life."
