Fanfic Glossary Collab

What Does Collab Mean?

Fandom Culture

Short for collaboration: a fanwork made by two or more creators together — co-written fic, art trades, fic-and-art pairings, or multi-creator projects. AO3 supports formal co-creatorship on a single work.

Collab in Practice

Collaboration is woven through fandom's infrastructure: big bangs pair writers with artists by design, zines assemble dozens of contributors, and co-written fics let two authors split POV characters or alternate chapters. AO3 accommodates this directly — a work can list multiple creators, appearing on both dashboards with shared control — and the 'inspired by' link formalizes looser collaboration like writing fic of someone's art. Co-writing workflows range from shared documents with simultaneous editing to round-robin chapter trading, and the best partnerships produce voices neither writer manages alone. Crediting all hands involved, including betas and cheerleaders, is firm etiquette.

Example usage

"Our collab finally posted — she wrote his POV, I wrote hers, and our group chat suffered beautifully for six months."
