Fanfic Glossary Dere Types

What Does Dere Types Mean?

Fandom Culture

The family of Japanese fandom archetypes describing how characters express affection: tsundere, yandere, kuudere, dandere, and others. The shared suffix comes from deredere, meaning lovestruck.

Dere Types in Practice

The dere taxonomy classifies romantic characters by the obstacle between them and open affection: tsundere hides love behind hostility, kuudere behind composure, dandere behind shyness, and yandere weaponizes it. The system originated in Japanese otaku culture around dating sims and anime, then spread into international fandom as convenient shorthand for character dynamics in any media. Fans coin new dere variants constantly, most of them jokes, but the core four are stable vocabulary. In fic discourse the labels work as compressed characterization — calling a character a kuudere tells a reader exactly which emotional walls the romance plot will be dismantling.

Example usage

"The poll asked which dere type he is and the comments devolved into a 200-reply civil war."
