Fanfic Glossary Yandere

What Does Yandere Mean?

Fandom Culture

An archetype from anime fandom: a character whose love is genuine but pathological — devotion expressed through obsession, possessiveness, and violence. The sweet exterior conceals the dangerous attachment.

Yandere in Practice

Yandere combines Japanese yanderu (to be sick) with dere (lovestruck): love as illness, the dark mirror of the tsundere's love-as-denial. The archetype's home territory is anime, manga, and visual novels, where iconic yandere characters established the type's imagery — the smiling devotion that curdles into 'if I can't have you, no one can' — and fandom adopted the term for any character whose affection shades into obsession, canon or reimagined. In fic, yandere content spans a wide tonal range, from horror that takes the pathology seriously to dark-romance wish fulfillment, and it lives under clear tagging given the themes of stalking and violence involved. The archetype's popularity says something fandom enjoys discussing: absolute devotion is a fantasy with a monstrous edge, and yandere fiction is where that edge gets examined safely.

Example usage

"The fic reimagines the gentle childhood friend as a yandere, and the slow reveal is genuinely chilling."
