Fanfic Glossary Gatekeeping

What Does Gatekeeping Mean?

Fandom Culture

Policing who counts as a 'real' fan — quizzing newcomers, dismissing casual enjoyment, or guarding a fandom's borders against the wrong kind of enthusiasm. Universally practiced, universally condemned.

Gatekeeping in Practice

Gatekeeping is fandom's oldest bad habit dressed in each era's clothes: demanding newcomers name deep-cut episodes, sneering at fans who arrived via the adaptation, or treating shipping, fic, and other transformative engagement as lesser fandom than trivia mastery. The term sharpened into standard vocabulary during the 2010s 'fake geek girl' discourse, which exposed how often the gate checks gender, and fandom's stated ethic has since swung hard toward 'all enthusiasm is valid entry.' Practice lags principle — every fresh adaptation triggers a wave of old-guard grumbling, and fic fandom runs its own internal gates around ships and content. The accepted countermove is simple hospitality: handing newcomers recs instead of quizzes.

Example usage

"He tried gatekeeping her for only knowing the movies, so she handed him a 100k fic rec and converted her whole book club instead."
