Fanfic Glossary Fic

What Does Fic Mean?

Fandom Culture

The universal short form of fanfiction — both the mass noun ('reading fic') and the countable unit ('a fic,' 'three fics'). The word fandom actually uses day to day.

Fic in Practice

Fic is fandom's working vocabulary where fanfiction is the formal term: fans read fic, write fic, owe their exchange fic, and organize their lives around updating fic. The clipped form carries the culture's insider grammar — compounds like ficlet, deathfic, casefic, and chatfic all build on it, and 'the fic' with definite article often means a fandom's one legendary story everyone is presumed to have read. Usage marks belonging: media coverage says fanfiction, fandom says fic, and the difference is audible. The word's flexibility extends to verbs and exclamations — a compelling premise gets the response 'someone fic this immediately' — making fic less a noun than a load-bearing particle of fandom speech.

Example usage

"I have fic to read, fic to write, and an exchange fic due Friday, so no, I cannot come to dinner."
