Fanfic Glossary Epithet

What Does Epithet Mean?

Writing & Craft

A descriptive substitute for a character's name — 'the taller man,' 'the blond,' 'the detective' — and the subject of one of fic writing's most enduring craft debates. Overuse is a recognized hallmark of early fic style.

Epithet in Practice

Epithets enter fic through a sensible-seeming fear of repeating names and pronouns, and the result became a documented house style of amateur fiction: two characters kiss while being referred to as 'the older man' and 'the smaller male' until readers lose track of who is whom. Craft discourse in fandom pushed back hard, and 'just use their names' became standard beta advice, with the counterpoint that epithets work when they reflect point of view — a stranger is 'the detective' until the POV character learns his name. The debate recurs every few years with fresh examples and the same conclusion. Certain notorious epithets have achieved meme status as shorthand for the entire phenomenon.

Example usage

"The fic was lovely except both leads were 'the raven-haired male' so often I briefly thought a third man had entered the room."
