The format's value is volume and habit — thirty-one forced starts produce ficlets that would never otherwise exist, and writers mine their fictober output for expandable ideas all year. The rules are self-administered and mercy is standard; finishing all thirty-one days earns genuine bragging rights, while skipping freely is normal. October hosts a crowded calendar of parallel observances, including the adult-themed Kinktober and fandom-specific 'whump-tober' style variants, each with its own circulating prompt lists.
