Fanfic Glossary Challenge

What Does Challenge Mean?

Fandom Culture

Any organized fandom event that prompts people to create works under shared rules — exchanges, big bangs, bingos, prompt fests, or month-long daily themes. On AO3, 'challenge' is also the technical term for exchange and prompt-meme features attached to collections.

Challenge in Practice

Challenges are fandom's social engine for generating fanworks: they supply deadlines, prompts, and an audience, which together cure most cases of blank-page paralysis. The ecosystem is enormous and varied — gift exchanges assign recipients, bangs pair writers with artists, bingo cards offer trope grids, and themed weeks invite everyone to post around shared prompts. AO3 builds challenge infrastructure directly into collections, supporting two formal types: gift exchanges with matching, and prompt memes where anyone can claim prompts. A huge share of fandom's output, including many beloved classics, exists because some challenge demanded a fic by a deadline.

Example usage

"I never finish anything without a deadline, so I sign up for every challenge my fandom runs."
