What Does OTW (Organization for Transformative Works) Mean?

OTW (Organization for Transformative Works) in Practice
The OTW was born from a moment of fandom self-determination: after commercial ventures tried to monetize fanfic and platforms kept deleting it, fans organized to build and own their archive — the rallying sentiment, from fan and co-founder astolat's much-linked post, was that fandom should own the servers. The organization runs AO3, the Fanlore wiki, the Open Doors archive-rescue project, the academic journal Transformative Works and Cultures, and a legal advocacy team that has defended fair-use protections for fanworks. It is volunteer-run and donor-funded, with periodic membership drives familiar to every AO3 user. Whatever one's complaints about AO3, the OTW's model — fan-owned, noncommercial, no ads — remains unique at its scale.
