What Does Plot Bunny Mean?
Writing & CraftA story idea that hops into a writer's head, demands attention, and multiplies. Plot bunnies are notoriously easier to acquire than to actually write.
Plot Bunny in Practice
The plot bunny is fandom's oldest metaphor for unsolicited inspiration, beloved because it captures the experience so precisely: ideas arrive uninvited, refuse to leave, and breed — outline one and three more appear. Writers speak of being 'bitten' by a bunny, of bunnies that 'won't let go,' and of hutches full of premises they'll never have time to write. The term predates modern social fandom, circulating in writing communities since at least the early internet era. Communities even run plot bunny adoption threads, where writers offer ideas they can't use to anyone willing to give them a home.
Example usage
"I sat down to edit chapter ten and instead a plot bunny handed me a fully formed time-loop AU."
