Primer in Practice
Primers are fandom's recruitment literature: enthusiastic, opinionated crash courses written to lure friends into a new obsession or to onboard exchange participants into an unfamiliar canon. A classic primer covers the source material's premise, the central characters with photographic evidence of their appeal, the ship's greatest hits, and a starter reclist. The form peaked on LiveJournal and Dreamwidth, where elaborate primers were community art, and it persists in Google Docs, Tumblr posts, and carrd pages. Writing a good primer is an act of evangelism, and fans openly credit specific primers for entire fandom conversions.
