What Does Proshipper / Profic Mean?
Fandom CultureA label for fans who believe any subject may be depicted in fiction so long as it's properly tagged, and who oppose harassment over fictional content. The opposing position is broadly called 'anti.'
Proshipper / Profic in Practice
The proship/anti divide is contemporary fandom's defining ideological conflict, centering on whether dark or taboo content in fiction — and the people who create it — should be tolerated, opposed, or harassed. Proshippers (or profic fans) generally hold that fiction is not endorsement, that AO3's warning-and-tagging system exists precisely so everyone can curate their own experience, and that campaigns against authors are the real harm; antis generally hold that some fictional content is inherently harmful or normalizing. Both labels are contested, applied more often by opponents than claimed, and definitions shift between platforms. The discourse shapes bios, DNI lists, and blocklists across fandom, and most practical advice for newcomers is simply: tag honestly, curate your space, don't harass anyone.
Example usage
"Her bio just says 'proship, fiction is fiction, block freely' to head off the discourse entirely."
