Rarity is relative — a 'rarepair' in a giant fandom might have more fic than an entire small fandom — but the experience is universal: sorting the tag by date and recognizing every author, celebrating each new work like a holiday, and eventually writing the fic you wished existed. Rarepair culture has its own infrastructure, including dedicated exchanges and events built around minimum-fic-count thresholds that determine eligibility. The community ethos is creation as survival: rarepair fans are disproportionately likely to become writers and artists out of necessity. The affectionate motto is some variant of 'I looked into the tag, saw it was empty, and rolled up my sleeves.'
