Fanfic Glossary Yuletide

What Does Yuletide Mean?

Fandom Culture

The legendary annual rare-fandom gift exchange: participants request and write fic for tiny fandoms — obscure books, cancelled shows, commercials, anything too small for regular fic traffic. A December institution since the early 2000s.

Yuletide in Practice

Yuletide inverted fandom's usual economics: instead of serving the juggernauts, it exists exclusively for fandoms below a smallness threshold, matching writers to recipients' wishlists for canons that may have never had fic before — and might never again. Running since 2003 and hosted on AO3 (whose development it influenced; the archive's exchange infrastructure owes much to Yuletide's needs), the event produces thousands of works each Christmas, revealed anonymously on the 25th with authors unmasked on New Year's. Its culture is distinct and beloved: letters lovingly pitching microscopic canons, the heroic pinch-hitters who save defaulted assignments, and the annual collective joy of watching a fandom of three people receive its first story in a decade. For rare-canon devotees, Yuletide is the high holiday.

Example usage

"Her Yuletide assignment was a fandom with four total fics, and her gift doubled its AO3 presence."
